The Great Debate: Sins Forgiven Due To The Cross or the Resurrection?

NOTE: Due to technical issues, we had to re post this blog.

I once again apologize for not writing this “Bit” earlier, but those of you who are aware of my Son’s condition, he is back in the hospital again. This has been a very difficult time for our family, we continue to solicit your prayers.

I was debating a pastor the other day who disputes of the message of the cross. His argument centered on the statement the Apostle Paul made regarding the Resurrection. The Apostle Paul says 1st Corinthians 15:12, 17 “Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some of you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; and ye are yet in your sins.” The premise for him was, and is for those that believe this way, is that our sins were not forgiven until Jesus was raised from the dead.

I asked the question; the vial in the the temple (tabernacle) why was it there? It was there to separate men from God because of sin! Then I asked when was that vial rent (torn) from top to bottom? It was when Jesus said while on the cross it is finished and said “Into thy hands I commend my spirit.” The bible says the vial in the temple was rent from top to bottom. Because Jesus death paid the price for sin, then and only the could sinful man have access to God because the sin debt was paid. I also asked; when did the thief that said remember me when you enter into your Kingdom, go to paradise? It wasn’t after the resurrection, it happened immediately after Jesus died and paid the price for his sins, and the sins of all mankind. The old testament saints could not go to paradise unless they believed that Jesus would come and pay the price for their sin. Therefore when Jesus died the sin debt was paid, so Jesus said to the thief “This day thou shall be with me in paradise.” Not at the resurrection!

I said to the pastor; the resurrection of Jesus Christ was never in doubt! If his death at Calvary had not paid the price for all sin, then Jesus could not be resurrected from the dead. Then I explained to him what Paul meant by his statement, “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; and ye are yet in your sins.” The reason why we would be yet in our sins would have been because his death at Calvary did not pay for it. Then our faith would be useless also. Our sins forgiven was not predicated on the resurrection, but his death on Calvary’s cross!
